Services Provided Include: The Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) is a statewide K-12 initiative managed by the Department of Education. The goal of the ARI is to significantly improve reading instruction and ultimately achieve 100% literacy among public school students. The Alabama Reading Initiative provides differentiated levels of support, including professional development, onsite support, and school coaches to over 1,000 schools. The initiative focuses intensely on three aspects of the teaching of reading: preventing reading difficulties, identifying struggling readers and intervening to help them become proficient readers, and expanding the reading power of all students.

Services Provided Include: This is the local affiliate of the International Reading Association which is an organization for educators who want to promote literacy and to improve their skills in the area of literacy instruction. Our major project is to host an annual Young Authors’ Conference where we bring to Tuscaloosa a published children’s author. During the author’s visit, along with the Saturday conference open to children in the West Alabama area, we also sponsor school visits for local schools. Our goal is to support the interest and love of literacy for area students. We are funded strictly on donations.
